September 2008

Hello
Welcome to Brighton & Hove Parents' Forum's e-newsletter for September. Each month, we spotlight parent-related news, views and events that are causing a stir (or about to).

Blogs

"Stop eating your brother's brain and give it back to him. Now!"

In terms of impact, our two blogs, Bad Dad and Not a Supermum are certainly getting mouths wagging.

Bad Dad has recently spent the day at the Royal Alex with his oldest daughter. He says: "The staff are absolutely fabulous at preparing both the child and parents, but nothing can really prepare you for the overwhelming emotion you feel as the anaesthetic goes in and your child just slips away from you...." Ooooh.

On the other end of the spectrum, Bad Dad writes of seeing High School Musical with his son.

Not a Supermum, on the other hand, has witnessing her sons engage in sibling squabbling, leading her to identify the 'Summer 2008 Ridiculous Fights Top 5'

News Round-Up

Away from the blogs, we have many interesting news items on our website:

Obesity: Back in March this year we asked for your feedback on the new childhood obesity strategy first version. Now the PCT would like your opinions on the final version of the strategy.

Term dates: Also, the Children and Young People's Trust is currently consulting about the school term dates and holidays for the academic year 2010-2011. This is your opportunity to have your say and make sure all the facts affecting families are made known to the people that matter.

School Admissions: Next, we wanted to bring you attention to a national consultation being carried out by the DfES about the school admission process.

In the Children's Plan, published in December 2007, Ministers committed to review the school application and allocation process. The idea is to make the admissions process as fair, transparent and straightforward as possible. The Department has launched a consultation which runs until 2nd October. They are requesting your views on the proposed changes.

Online directory: Also happening behind the scenes is ContactPoint. ContactPoint will be a basic online directory which will enable practitioners working with children to quickly find out who else is working with the same child or young person. The idea is to make it easier to deliver more coordinated support.
