Burning The Clocks

With the days getting shorter and the weather colder it is sometimes hard for us parents to find an activity for the whole family.  Fortunately Brighton has a festival that occurs on the winter solstice that is quickly becoming an internationally known event, but is still for the locals.

The Burning the Clocks Festival has been running since 1993 and is a very family orientated event.  On the night of the winter solstice (this year being the 21st of December) there is a lively and at times eerily beautiful procession, where most people in it are carrying lit lanterns made out of willow canes and white tissue paper, which makes its way through the city and ends at the beach.  Upon arriving the lanterns are thrown into a large bonfire and there is a firework display.

If you and your family would like to participate in the parade you can attend one of the 12 workshops that take place at the Phoenix Arts Centre and make your own lantern.  If you want to attend a workshop it is best to book your place immediately as they fill up quickly.  If you can't make one of the workshops you can buy a make your own lantern kit.
